Burford Theatre Renovation

Location: Arkansas City, Kansas Owner: Arkansas City Arts Council Architect: William Morris Associates Construction: Eby Construction

The historic Burford Theatre opened in 1924 in Arkansas City, Kansas. After being donated to the Arkansas City Arts Council in 2004, a project to renovate the theatre was initiated. In December 2014, Eby Construction began Phase I of the three-phase, 12,000-square-foot renovation.

Project Details
  • Phase I included work in the foyer, atrium, small gallery and upper stage.
  • Phase II of the project consisted of work in the auditorium, lower stage and promenade area. The auditorium’s decorative plaster torsade features were re-molded, and the ceilings and walls were repainted in the original 1930’s color scheme. Also included in this phase were new concessions and popcorn serving area cabinets in the lower promenade and rebuilding a second staircase.
  • Phase III will include carpeting, upper promenade and restroom finishes and installation of theatre equipment. Work will begin on this phase once all funds are raised.
