Cooper Hall
Location: Sterling, Kansas Owner: Sterling College Architect: Gould Evans Associates, LCThis project was the renovation of the “Old Main” building, a four-story historical limestone structure, located on the Sterling College campus. The project also included the construction of a 1,200 SF addition. The building had been standing vacant since 1989, when it was closed due to the limestone shifting. Sterling College chose restoration over demolition of the 115-year old building. This project was partially supported by a Heritage Trust Fund grant from the Kansas State Historical Society.
The work included selective demolition of existing floors, walls, ceilings, and associated mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The renovation work included cleaning and repainting the existing masonry walls, injection grouting of masonry walls, repairing roof and floor framing, reinforcement of window sills between pilasters, relaying and plumbing existing stone walls, replacing cracked stone, installing new window systems and new roofing, and construction of new wood framed walls and concrete slab on grade.
Construction of the addition was wood-framed interior walls, stone veneer and concrete masonry backup, and steel beam with metal deck roof structure. This included site work, landscaping, and mechanical and electrical.
