In July 2023, Eby began collaborating with NMC and HFG Architecture to explore the feasibility of expanding the hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) to include a new behavioral health unit and updated reception and waiting areas. A critical part of the planning process was determining whether the design and construction could be completed by March 2025—the deadline to utilize the grant funds the hospital was pursuing.

Thanks to close coordination and a fast-tracked design approach, the team determined early on that the aggressive timeline could be met. The project required a carefully phased construction plan, allowing specific areas to be completed and occupied before work on subsequent phases could begin.

Design work officially kicked off in October 2023, and Eby broke ground on the first phase—a new ambulance drop-off garage—in March 2024. Once that garage was completed, the existing garage space was converted into the new behavioral health ED department. Simultaneously, another addition was constructed to accommodate the remodeled reception and waiting areas.

The updated reception area was designed with staff safety in mind, featuring bullet-resistant glass and Kevlar-reinforced millwork. Upon its completion, the old reception area was transformed into a new waiting room, triage area, and bathroom. All work was successfully completed by the March 2025 grant deadline.
